Raw Chef Dan's Tip Of The Month
Take Inventory & Write Your Goals
Well the holiday season is upon us and the food and drinks that go with it will soon be tempting you. The best thing I find to do in these times is to take inventory and write down where I want to be at the top of the New Year!
What I mean by this is that I really take a look at where I am at right now and make a note of it. Write down where I can reference it easily to remind myself where I am now with my goals. So you will want to note if you are we still working on our weight, are you were you want to be and would like to keep it that way? Is your food intake what you want it to be or do you still need to work on that? How do you feel, energy, alertness, flexibility… Regardless if you worked hard at it and want to maintain or you simply don’t want to drift any further during these months, you will want to take a good honest look and own it. Now write down where you want to be come Jan 2010 so you can remind yourself when tempting moments tap you on your shoulder. Specifically write how you feel when you feel your best so you can conger that up and embody it when being tempted to drift from your path. Feeling that way you want can diminish the temptation to change it.

News On The Forefront
Keep Nanotechnology Out of Organic!
A major reason why consumers shop for products that are certified organic is to avoid hazardous and unlabeled Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs), toxic chemicals, and now the most recent, and likely most dangerous hi-tech poison of them all - nanotechnology. Nanotechnology is now a multi-billion dollar Frankenstein monster industry churning out a vast menu of untested and unlabeled products containing tiny nanoparticles including non-organic vitamin supplements, food packaging, processed food, cosmetics, and sunscreens.
The United States Department of Agriculture's National Organic Standards Board (NOSB) has been debating an official ban on nanotechnology in organic. When it meets November 3-5, 2009 in Washington, D.C., the NOSB will consider a recommendation supported by the the OCA and the organic community that would "prohibit nanotechnology in organic production, processing, and packaging."
Nanotechnology is inherently dangerous. Mounting scientific evidence indicates that nanomaterials produce dangerous "free radicals" which can destroy or mutate DNA and can cause damage to the liver and kidneys. Nanotech particles not only injure and kill lab animals - they can kill you as well.
Every day, new evidence of the dangers of nanotechnology emerges:
Workplace nanoparticle exposure was linked to seven cases of serious and progressive lung disease in China including two patient deaths.
Nanoparticles present in a chemical found in sunscreens - titanium dioxide - are being examined as possibly causing Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases.
Tell the USDA that you want the National Organic Standards Board to take a strong stand against the use of nanotechnology in organic. Please act before the October 19 deadline.
"... carbon sequestration is the best way to buy time in a warming world. Cutting emissions will help, but not as immediately as sequestration...food production must be fundamentally restructured to simultaneously preempt and react to the devastating effects of climate change. ...organic agriculture presents an untapped solution, an underutilized carbon sink at the ready. ...if the world's 3.5 billion tillable acres could be transitioned to organic agriculture now, land could sequester almost 40 percent of our current carbon emissions. No other proposed carbon mitigation solution comes close to that potential impact, particularly using existing and readily available technology."
World Food Day - Organic Is the Answer to Food Security
"Organic agriculture puts the needs of rural people and the sustainable use of natural resources at the center of the farming system. Locally adapted technologies create employment opportunities and income. Low external inputs minimize risk of indebtedness and intoxication of the environment. It increases harvests through practices that favor the optimization of biological processes and local resources over expensive, toxic and climate damaging agro-chemicals...in response to a frequently asked question: Yes, the world can be fed by the worldwide adoption of Organic agriculture. The slightly lower yields of Organic agriculture in favorable, temperate zones are compensated with approximately 10-20% higher yields in difficult environments such as arid areas."

Gaiam admits that bottles previously labeled "BPA-free" leach BPA at nearly 20 times SIGG’s levels.
Nothing surprises me anymore. Six weeks ago SIGG announced that their aluminum water bottles -- you know, the ones that everyone bought in order to avoid BPA -- actually contained BPA. Now that surprised me. Since that time, I still have not figured out how to resolve my own personal water bottle situation. I want to carry a reusable water bottle. Honestly, I do. I'm on the go a lot, and I drink a lot of water. Ditto for my kids. But I really can't figure out whom to trust.
Last week, the website Z recommends published a report that called out Gaiam on the BPA status of their aluminum water bottles -- bottles that were very clearly being sold as "BPA-free." Today, the company has quietly (on its retail website) provided the data from independent lab test results that show BPA leaching levels at 23.8 parts per billion. These findings are more than 10 times the detection limit that SIGG provided in its own water bottle testing and over 18 times more than the leaching levels found in independent studies of SIGG water bottles.
The internal surface of our aluminum water bottles is coated with a thin, food-grade epoxy resin that meets U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) 175.300 requirements for toxic elements in foodware. (This lining is neither required nor industry standard for stainless steel bottles.)
We also asked our water bottle manufacturer to comprehensively test our aluminum bottles for BPA, using industry-standard test methods. No detectable levels of BPA were found in the gasket, the cap or the coating material in testing under normal use and care conditions.
While there is no government or industry standard in place for BPA levels acceptable in food and beverage containers, our aluminum and stainless steel water bottles are compliant with all existing federal government rules for food and beverage containers.
We also took additional steps to help ensure your safety via independent laboratory tests that go well beyond FDA requirements. An independent lab subjected our aluminum water bottles to continuous extreme heat — nearly 200 degrees Fahrenheit — in an environmental chamber for three days while the bottles were filled with water. Under these extreme conditions, a trace amount of BPA (23.8 parts per billion) was detected in the water inside the bottle. This test was performed under conditions outside the normal use and care conditions we recommend on our product packaging and shopping website. For example, we explain that the bottle should not be washed in a dishwasher or filled with any hot liquids.
Even though it may seem that the BPA testing was extreme, the folks at Z recommends point out that testing at 90 degrees Celsius for a three-day window is a standard testing procedure commonly seen in BPA testing, and was likely part of a standard block of tests for the bottles.
